Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The Sealdah railway station in Kolkata is undergoing extensive upgrades to accommodate longer trains, with all platforms being extended to accommodate 12-coach EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) trains instead of the current nine-coach ones. This initiative aims to enhance the commuter experience and cater to increasing passenger demands.
According to railway officials, the extension work is being carried out in phases. Phase I has been completed and Phase II is set to commence soon. Despite the ongoing construction, authorities are striving to minimize disruptions to train services. The goal is to complete the extension work by the end of June or the first week of July, ensuring that all platforms are ready to accommodate the longer trains.
During the extension work on the first five platforms, scheduled from Friday to Sunday, train intervals to and from various destinations will be slightly increased during peak hours. However, to compensate for this, mostly 12-coach EMU rakes will be operated along the Sealdah North and Main sections.
This upgrade is expected to significantly improve passenger capacity and convenience, especially during peak hours, and enhance overall railway infrastructure in Kolkata.
